Hello all! I am new to this car and also this forum. I have just purchased a 2001 1.8t with a broken cat/o2 sensor. When I brought it to the shop the mechanic said rather than spending the money to make it stock I should straight pipe it. Now I have no o2 sensor cat or resonator and after 2 weeks my car is "chugging". I don't know if it is the lack of o2 sensor or if the muffler is the original and is clogged but it smells really rich even running 91 fuel.. any bit of help would be soo nice as the closest vw special shop is 20+ miles away and I wouldn't drive it that far like this.. hopefully I could just cut the muffler off but that may be wishful thinking.
I'm guessing the vehicle didn't run properly, since you bought it with bad o2 sensors/cat.
You should try to get it to your nearest auto parts store and have it scanned for codes. They could help you with the diagnosis or you could post the codes here and we can try to help you further.
There are a lot of possibilities for the vehicle running rough. I would start with a tune up, clean the MAF, replace fuel filter, and check for broken vacuum lines.
Headed to a shop tomorrow that has a couple of mechanics who own vw hopefully I can get some answers for not to to much money.. thanks for the info guys!
Turns out there is a random misfire on cylinders 1, 2, and 4... just my luck.. looking into the ignition coil plug harness is quite the job.. but one I am willing to take on with some help from a friend.. any advice would be appreciated though..
Running very well! Who'd have thought huh?! Short intake and exhaust to come then I am thinking of going to the scrap yard and picking up a hood to boser.. thanks for everyone's help!
