I have an estimate from the vw dealership to replace my ECM for 900 or so including labor. Is that a good deal or should I buy it myself used and have them or have my dad replace it with the used part? The Pic-A-Part sells ECMs for $18.11, but I have heard of problems with used ECMs.

Unfortunatly you can't put a used computer in your car - if it even does run, it will not run correctly. On OBD 2 vehicles, each ECM has to be flashed to that particular VIN. You might be able to get an ECM at Advance, Auto Zone, or some other parts house like that, but you will definitely have to take it to VW to have it flashed to your car. You could even try looking online, but if you find one, it will still need to be flashed. Your best bet is to take it to VW so that you get the correct ECM and its flashed correctly.
