i have a 2001 jetta 1.8t. recently, the water pump siezed, causing the timing belt to go. i got the pump and belt replaced, but the shop told me that the engine is toast because the valves hit the pistons when the belt blew. any idea as to how expensive this is to repair? i am keeping the car, and would like to do some mods to it once i get it fixed. rebuild or new engine?

Well..... If the valves and the pistons where the only thing hitting then all you need is new pistons and valves..... Could be a little pricey depending.... Other than that I think a new engine would be more overall because replacing pistons and valves aren't extremely hard.... If the hitting caused the pistons to gorge the cylinders then you maybe ****ed....

[teacher]its all gonna depend on your bank balence bearing in mind its gonna cost you to investigate the damage and do the repair work. 9/10 cases where the cambelt has gone the engine tends to be a write off. As untitled said if there is further damage caused by the pistons and valves you be better with a new lump im afraid:(
