Hoping someone can help me solve a loud fan issue.

The problem first came about while we were waiting (idling) in a very long boarder line up. The temp on the dash indicated the engine was heating up. Then starte the loud fan. It almost sounds as if the engine is about to blow. Being a little freaked out by the noise, I turned the engine off. But the noise continued until the engine temp dropped to a "normal" range.

I've since experienced this abnoxious fan noise whenever I have to idle for any length of time or whenever there isn't sufficient air running through the front of the car.

My guess... a cooling fan is about to go. My questions are: which fan? And how pricey will it be to fix?

I have a 90 jetta gli 16v and the same thing happnede to me. I chased the electric demons and finally found the culprit - bad ground. Changed the ground all is well. Also check the thermostat and temp sensor.

Good Luck.

You may also want to check and see if there is anything caught in the rad that is rubbing against the fan blades. Sometimes twigs or things of that nature can cause the problem.

I think the good thing is that the fan activates when necessary, so the temp sensor is probably working fine and the fan is getting power.

One thing to try is spin the fan by hand(obviously with the engine off and cool) and see how she sounds. Any amount of noises indicate the fan motor may be bad.

BTW...just bought a 91 Jetta Diesel, and these cars rock!
