2000 jetta overheating?

8051 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Silverstone1.8T
hey whats up?

i have a 2000 jetta 2.0 GLS and in the past week, the temp gauge in my dashboard keeps getting hotter. I've had the car about 2 yrs now with minimal problems.

I found the antifreeze coolant tank, its looks about half full. But since this is the overflow tank does it need to be full? Do you think this might be the issue? Its only once reached the red where the light came on. Since then, i've been just doing short jaunts.

I cannot find anyplace that carries the antifreeze though. any suggestions????

Also it seems every 6 months my spark plugs need to get replaced. My mechanic says that the oil runs into the engine and thats whats causing it.

I'm very non informed about cars and need some advice.

THANKS !!!!

check the thermostat

as for the plugs, that means your head gasket is leaking and needs replacing, or your plug seals

how much does the head gasket replacement run.

and any ideas or where to get the special anti freeze for vw's? I've called all stores lookin for the g12 or whatever coolant and no place has it.
You will probably have to get the coolant from a dealership. As far as your issues it is more than likely your spark plug gaskets causing your problem if it was the head gasket your car would be running like ****. Get a valve cover gasket kit and replace that before jumping into a head gasket, its much cheaper. For your overheating take off the hose at your resevoir and rev up the car and see if there is coolant flowing out of it. If there isn't then you need to replace your water pump. This is very common on these things as the impellor on the pump is plastic. If it is flowing than I would look for a leak.
I don't understand why everyone thinks a certain coolant has to be used with a certain car....

NO you can not MIX coolants

YES you can REPLACE it with ANY other kind...(please o please refer to your specs for the climate you live in, RARELY is a 100% anti-freeze system. general rule is 50/50)
Hey i had the same problem, i have a 2000 jetta gls and i brought it to the dealer and it was the water pump... it went.. i have 120000 miles and they dont really last any longer then that supposedly
so i took it to my mechanic

and it was the thermostat. it wasn't opening so it also destroyed a tube underneath the radiator as well.

I also asked them to look at my drivers side headlight, i replaced the bulb myself but the light was only comin on occasionally. the wiring had burnt out as well.

So when all is said and done, it was about 350.00

seems i spend alot on repairing this vehicle. More so than i ever have on a previous vehicle.

it all depends on how well the previous owner took care of it.

i got lucky and my 98 jetta has records of every single maintenance done on it.

well i just got back from a trip to the mountains, now my brake light is on.
sheesh this car takes so much $$$$$ to maintain.

i've had the car for about a yr and 1/2 and put so much $ into it.
What you were asking about the overflow reservoir, it has lines for HOT and COLD marked towards the front of the vehicle. And coolant is fine, i run the Prestone pre-mixed in my car, only once have I put the "recommended" purple coolant in my tank and mine is fine, 10k later. Hope this helped.
