My automatic 96 Jetta no longer wants to properly shift gears, reverse doesn't even work any more. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what's the best solution...

I've talked to some mechanics and autowreakers and they're saying that after 200K kms the tranny's usually go, (mines at 201K). Sounds like a popular solution is a re and re with a 5-speed. Not cheap and lots of work. Is this my last options of saving my jetta???

Can e-mail me at [email protected]

Thanx

Sounds like your current tranny is done for....... try a junk yard with a jetta thats totalled in the rear end........ prolly run you 500 give or take..... then like 300 give or take for labor...... I blew the tranny in my old saturn and i bought a used twin cam tranny for like 400 and labor was like 250..... might be diff for VW's..... try it..... if not you could probably rebuild that one...... if not your jetta will sit and rot.....

for some reason auto trannies in vw's are ticking time bombs. Im amazed yours made it to 200k. Rebuilding it or putting in a used one is useless because you will have the same problem again. Your best bet is a 5spd swap

I've got it in the shop right now and they're looking into replacing the transmission control module. If this donesn't fix it then I'll swap the tranny with a 5-speed, which sounds like quiet the job. They say I'll need to change the axles too b/c with the automatics the airbags are triggered by axle sensors, unlike in the standards?!?

I'm thinking of just selling it after its running again, maybe?! anybody intrested in buying, I'm in Vancouver BC?
