well.. I guess start in the obvious place of the linkage. (when I say obvious i mean thats where I would start) look for any slop or binding.. have someone sit in the car and shift through the gears.

you can go to your local import shop and pick up the bushing kit for the shifter. that is the most common problem due to having to push down to get into reverse. the set cost approx 15 bucks and takes an hour to put in. most short shift kits will solve the problem as well.

What they said: look for and fix slop in the linkage. Maybe just need a minor adjustment at the round rod from the shifter and the pinch clamp at the linkage. 13mm wrench to loosen but not too much--just enough to spin it a tiny bit one way or the other. Tighten and test--if it won't go into 1st then go the other way with the pinch clamp.
