Blown Rack -_-

1517 Views 15 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  BlackedJetta
So,

Last week my power steering rack blew a seal completely open... And as some of you mk4 jetta owners know... that rack is extremely spend to replace let alone it pretty much has to be installed in a shop due to the measures you have to go through just to get the old one out.

BUT, I was snooping around on rockauto.com and found a part called rack and pinion seal for only 30-45$. SO, If any of you know how i would go about replacing just the seal please let me know and save me the 2 grand to fix it... That would be awesome!

Thanks guys,

This could give you a good guideline of how to get to it and replace those seals.

I took a peak at that thread but that says nothing about replacing the seals... That is about replacing the whole rack which im trying to avoid if i can..
If you have to take it out you might as well replace the rack
I said it gives you a guideline and it tells you how to get to it. Your gonna have pull the rack out to replace the seals anyways, so you might as well just replace the whole rack. If your seals don't work, then you will be doing all that work a second time and spending more money by getting a new rack.

I even looked for a rebuild kit and a DIY for rebuilding the rack, there is none.

Here's a rebuilt rack you can check out.

Compared to brand new.

oh ok, I guess you like rowing?
lol rowing? what do you mean
lol rowing? what do you mean
you'll have to shift more then in a 5 speed the gears will be shorter
oh ok, I guess you like rowing?

I just literally busted out laughing in front of a whole waiting room full of patients. haha
Lol you guys are Aholes sometimes you know that lol XD But no I get what you mean now but i want the 24v heard its a better engine over the 12V slightly in power not so much to be able to notice it but it on average can handle more.
Alright guys next time a manufacturer mech tells you what is wrong with your car get a second opinion because i was told my a CERTIFIED mechanic from the DEALERSHIP that my rack was blown.

I got second opinion from a friend that just graduated college that has been working on volkswagens for about three years and he said there is no way the hydraulic fluid is draining that fast put it up on a lift and looked at it and in five mins of it being up says nope not the rack its the return hose... ARE YOU [email protected]#ING KIDDING ME.

Moral of the story, don't believe manufaturers they just want money and now i am suing them and they are paying for the parts and labor.
