hello i have a 02 jetta automatic and the brake lights are stuck on all the time. heres what i know: the epc light is on on the dash, when you push the brake petal in it used to make a clicking sound in the shifter allowing you to take it out of gear and now it doesnt click. you can also move the shifter in any gear (you still have to push in the button) with the car on or off as well. please help, i dont wannna have to take it to a dealer.. thanks

i cant remember what the part is called but its a lock so that you cant shift into drive without your foot on the brake

Brake lights could also be the switch that is stuck on the pedal. Those eventually die and when they do, the lights can become stuck on. It might control the shift-lock as well. I believe some VWs have a recall on those... Not sure which ones though.

It's not too bad to replace (from what I understand) there are instructions online somewhere.

im not sure if its the same problem but i took my 2000 auto jetta to the dealer to get a valet key programed and there was a recall on the brake light senser or something to that respect. In which they replaced free. they told me that there was a problem with the brake lights staying on or not coming on at all thus causing all sorts of problems...

Yea, I'm trying to get mine out of park. Any idea where the release is on a 99.5?

There is a recall on the brake light switch. Check with your dealer.

Some times if you will hold the brake pedal for long enough, it will release. It wont do any good to stomp it or anything like that unfortunately, though I am sure you would like to.
If it won't release, you will have to call the dealership and see if they will pay for the tow, or if you will have to cover it yourself, but the recall includes the 99.5's, as that is what mine is also.

its the break light switch...I had to replace that today, it killed my battery overnight.....it's only 9dollars at a local auto part store
