I'm looking at buying an mkiv 1.8t, its going to be my daily driver, with possibly a few small mods intake exhaust nothing major. I have been doing a lot of research on them and it seems that they have a pretty spotty track record for engine troubles. I need this car to be reliable and last me for a while with out huge repair costs, i'm a college student on a budget. Basically are these issues with these coils (not exactly sure what they are from what i've read) very common any other common issues i should know about? also what about a vr6 do they have more or less problems?

Also how easy are they to work on? I've got some under the hood skills and a lot of my friends are pretty talented, is it one of the cars that only the dealer can really work on or is it more user friendly?

i just replaced all four coils on mine and havent had a problem and it drives better. the coils cost about four hundred for a full set so goodluck

The cars mechanicaly minor repairs are simple to work on..... Electronics and the wiring is a little messy but not many people complain about it going wrong or what not.....

If anything does break it may be a little pricey depending because it is a german car and most parts are foreign...... but not bad.......
