1998 GL JETTA
2.0 MANUAL 5 SPEED

car refuses to go into 1st and reverse
if i try and go into reverse i have to force it and when it goes in it jerks and makes a loud clunk. like an auto transmission parked on a hill...

i have to force 1st as well but when coming to a stop i can slow down almost to a stop and put in 1st no problem

i have been starting my car in gear and turning it off to go into reverse

i have never checked gear oil and don't think it has ever been checked

it also seems like when iam in reverse and i have the clutcch down it still wants to roll back like as if the clutch was out

i also just noticed when i press the clutch in it makes a gargling or swallowing noise>? when i let it go its fine

Sometimes it will make a whining noise when you press the clutch all the way in. When it goes bad it doesn't press the pressure plate far enough in so you notice it in first and reverse when you're not moving. When you are already moving it's hard to notice in 2, 3, 4, 5th gear.

Take a look at you control arms ...might be the culprit

It's your clutch cable. It's shot. Stop your video at 0:03. See the black accordion tube that's cracked in half. That's the problem. It's not disengaging the clutch fully. You need to replace it with a manual type cable. Let me warn you that it's a nightmare to change. Looks like you're not too mechanically inclined so I would look for someone with the ability to help you. Also get a cover and boot for your gear shift.

i just put new lower control arms a few months ago. i can see that the rubber on the ball joint that connects to the wheel is split open.

yeah i did notice the clutch cable so should i put a mk2 cable thats what i heard?

so if i opened the hood and engaged or disengaged the clutch with my hand it should be fine?

iam very serious about fixing this. i bought this car for 300 dollars because they thought it had a bad transmission because there would hear a noise when they accelerate all i did was change lower control arms but now having clutch problems.

Just get the correct cable for your car. There's no performance advantage in using anything else. Keep it simple. You have plenty of work to do.
