Aloha, I'm considering buying a used 2002 VR6 GLX V6 wagon and would appreciate thoughts. I live on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, where we don't have any VW dealerships, though we do have a few local mechanics who work on VWs. I want to consider possible maintenance issues & costs. I've leased Jettas previously, and always had a warranty. Today I have champagne taste and beer pocketbook, so while my heart says "Jetta," my brain says "be careful, and do your homework!"

I'm having the car looked at tomorrow by a local mechanic. It has 105,xxx miles on it, and is being offered for $4,000. Exterior is near-cherry. 2 owners, both followed routine maintenance. The major issue I'm aware of is the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. The cooling fans were replaced in the past year; the radiator and fuel pumps were replaced prior to that. Unfortunately there isn't a file with complete maintenance records, but I should be able to speak with the former owner in addition to the person who's selling it now, as it's a small island.

Appreciate any thoughts on what to expect/plan for in terms of maintenance, and general reviews of how people like this car, or not.

It also has roof racks and wet okole seat covers, which is a plus for Hawaii since we're often getting in the car wet from the ocean. I was impressed also that it has no rust, and only a tiny ding smaller than a dime.

Thank you for your time! Aloha, Heather

What makes the Catalytic Converter needed to be replaced? Maintenance however the most important would be Timing Belt and Water pump.

its a timing chain lol, make sure the timing chain has been done since that's really the most expensive thing to do on the maintenance list and make sure they prove it has been done, second did the op say it needs a new cat? or is it just assumed? if you need a new cat you'll have to have the old one cut out and a new one welded in unless you go with an aftermarket dow pipe and cat
