well, I just replaced the heater core, it took two days. I'll tell you this much, if this one springs a leak I'm selling it. I had to remove the ENTIRE dashboard, steering wheel and all. TWO DAYS wires, wires, wires. Good god, I've never seen so many wires. My wife came out to check on me and started freaking out when she saw all the wires, and my dash in the back seat. HAHAHAHA. But with the aid of my tattered Bentley manual and that good ole DIY mentality I nailed it. And I saved 1500$ in labor by doing it myself (yeah $1,500, ridiculous huh), those damn vw techs at the dealerships will drain you and most other shops won't touch vw's.

It's crazy, I payed $3,000 for the car 3 years ago and since I've probably spent $6,000 on parts and labor for every thing from a transmission to tires to repairing the wreck damage. If I didn't love this car, I swear......

I had an old 68' bug back in the 90's and parts were more plentiful and cheaper then and still are today, CRAZINESS.

Lol.... My grandfather is a foreign car mechanic (VW, Audi, Subaru Mainly, ect.) and he was telling me that VW's are an electrical nightmare, along with one of my dad's friends thats a car detailer.....

I myself am a DIY person, so i agree 10k is a lot... But if you find someone to do it for cheaper that knows they can just teach you as they do it then labor will be no worry at all..... doo luck with the project... is there any pics of it somehwere haven't looked?

No I didn't take pics. I realized as I was knee deep in wires I should photo graphically chronical this but the shear workload and my wife not being home at the time (she had the camera with her) and my unwillingness to stop and wait for her ,overrode the impulse.

However, I vow all future work will be chronicaled.

Speaking of which, in a day or two I will be making a badgeless grille. Yes, making. The down side of my cabrio swap is lack of aftermarket body parts. So I purchased a MkIV golf badgeless grille and will make it fit (the mkIV golf headlights are further apart than the 3.5 cabrio's).

Stay tuned.

By the way we should try to find an emoticon of a dollar sign with wings for times like these. LOL

I am a DIY guy as well and the $10k is a DIY figure. The only thing I outsourced was the tranny replacement. As for where the money would go, I'm talking hyperflow intake manifold, supercharger, 5 speed tranny to 6 speed mod, coilovers, Fox dual exhaust, paint, '08 Rabbit rims, Momo accessories, etc.

Now if I could just win the damn lottery.:D

(edit) I still can't seem to get the my garage function to work.

The lottery would be a huge help. But if i won the lottery I would just by a mint Jetta or golf and go from there instead of doing everything myself..

I like the idea of making the badgless grille fit, i tried on my car and busted the grille so i went back to the badged.........
