So now that they are putting synthetic in the engine right from the factory they claim the first service is due at 5000mi. I cringe every time I think about that. Putting 5 grand on a brand new motor with the same oil just doesnt feel right. I bought a service contract with my car for the 5000 intervals. Am I crazy for wanting to dump the oil in between regular service intervals? which oil company has the contract to produce VW brand oil?

you will be fine at 5k with full synth. I know on the MKV Rabbits, 2.5L the oil cap has castrol stamped on it.

My dealer told me that driving conditions in my area (Memphis) required more frequent service. They told me I should bring it in every 3K. Think they're just trying to stick me with a few extra $80 oil changes?
Like pow3r hour said just check your dipstick every couple k's to make sure they not screwing you. it should have a clear look when you take it out. if its very black then its time to change your oil. its also nice to check and see if you need to add oil or not.

Pay attention to detail!

I just had my jetta in for 20k service & my oil change was only $54.95:eek:
The total bill was $155.74 but that is only because my better half :eek:did 1/ 2 the service before we took it up! He did the cabin filter replacement, and boy did it need it! wow what those things collect is amazing! :D He also bought me new 16" rims & new rubber for summer and put those on so that saved the whole "rotation & inspections" of the tires on the 20k service ! He topped off my fluid in my washer bay and made sure the car was not needing for anything! My service bill should have been $244 but i paid $155.74 because he is a master of the VW service! HA Thank You Better Half!
My manual says every 5k for an oil change and filter change, the 30k "recommended service" is about $500 if you add it all up! but i am sure "praying" that he will cut that in half since he loves to work on the VW's........... he has posts on the ROC site for all the new things he has done to his 2008 rabbit! its amazing! :D

If the oil is full synthetic, you can go 10K after the first oil change. But I have a 2.0T, and I end up having to add oil every 5k or so, about 1/2 a quart. I'm in California however and we only have extreme heat. If you drive in extreme cold, you should change it every 5k. Just follow the intervals in the manual and make sure you add the correct oil, it should always be full synthetic and make sure you have the right viscosity for your region.

NO daily driver REQUIRES an oil change every 3k miles...

Synth can go upwards of 10k between changes, and normal oil goes to around 6k between changes.

general rule of thumb is change very 5k or every 6 months (winter-summer). 3k is DEF overdoing it.

Follow the manual's recommendations. My many years of experience is that "we" cannot out-engineer the engineers who developed the engine. In my 2.0T, I have to buy the Castrol oil @ a VW dealership due to the specific viscosity required. I have yet to find another source for this oil..... By the way, DIY--its very easy!
