Electrical, sensor, ignition, or instruments???

Looking for some help. I bought a used 1999.5 VW Jetta GLS 2.0. we test drove it for half hour and drove it 30 miles home with no issue. We sprayed under the hood to clean it up. Drove home fine ( i avoided the batt and alternator) the next day when we took off the ABS LIGHT came on and the brake light was flashing, the radio cut in and out and the dash lights were going off and on. When i pressed the gas pedal all the guages fell to zero. I drove it to the shoulder and it died. Half an hour later, jumped it and drove it home. It will start and drive fine. Batt and alternater tested good. I don't see any burn or sign of arc under the hood or the dash. When you have the lights on and press the gas gently the dash lights dim and go out at about 1000 RPM, when the the engine comes down they fade back in. At 20 MPH the ABS light comes on and guages drop and come back on at 5 MPH. Nothin works inside wen the guages drop

I know that you said the battery and alternates tested fine but my gf had a 04 bettle and it did the same exact thing and it was the alternator and hers tested fine as well. Just a suggestion.
Thanks, that was my first feeling, and it was the first part of my troubleshoot, i may just put down the $200 for a new one and see cuz i'm tired of testing connectors upside down under the dash.
Ya honestly it sucks but that's what I would do. Cuz her car did the exact same thing and after taking it to the dealer that's what they told us was wrong with it.

All those symptoms? Was it doin it all the time or kina sporatic? Sometimes it won't do it for ten miles. I drove to a mechanic and stopped doin it on the way and didnt do anything while he looked at it.
Ya hers did it and than you could jump it and she would run fine for awhile and than started doing it again. They hooked it up to the computer at the dealer and 140 dollars later they told us it was the alternater

So the lights on the cluster dimmed in and out wen you hit the gas and the guages dropped to 0 wen you got a certain speed??? Just seems odd for alternator!? Swappin out tomoro, thanks again
Took alternato off and it tested bad at two places. Any advice on the damn puley? It don't come with it so i'll have to use the old one, it looks like it will be difficult to remove
That sucks. Can u rent a puller at autozone?

Ya a three jaw puller should work. Just take the nut off and than pull the pulley off and when u put the pulley back on use the nut to tighten it down. I'm not 100% sure but it might also be reverse threads

Did you get the nut off?

I've not attempted to remove anything yet, new one should be here tomoro. If not then monday. My mechanic said he'll remove/replace the pulley for 10 bucks so thats probly my route lol. Skimmer did you have similar symptoms?
I was having trouble getting the nut off of my alternator and an impact gun did the trick

Got the new alternator on no problems with electronics now, but the tranny is in third gear all the time. I did take the two connectors that you can see on top of it off when i was testing sensors, but it is on solid, no bent prongs or on female side. I had the battery completely out two when i swapped the alt. To make sure it was charged. I heard i had to do a reset? Anyone know anything about that? Is it a computer reset? Major? Dealer only? HELP!!! lol
Re: My cars shifting again
Well for anyone who sees this, since i ran the car with the transmission sensor unplugged it put it in limp mode on my 99.5 MKIV Jetta. I had a friend at a transmission shop scan it with a European scanner and it had a bunch of codes for the transmision sensors stored. "it had several others because i unplugged a bunch of crap looking for a short" After he cleared them, all is well, Jetta is out of limp mode and driving fine. Shifts smoother than before. So before you go to the dealer with "limp mode" try to find a 'friend' with a vag-com or european scanner. A lot of smaller shops even have them. At a shop it was going to be $80, but if you know someone inside, they may help for a much lower price. just throw them a bone please.
