I was wondering if there was any typical sensor that goes bad in these cars, or is known to go bad. Im getting a codes for the O2 sensors, the maf sensor, and some heater circuit, bank 1 sensor 1 and 2 stuff. I got a total of 7 codes. And oh yea, the evap canister code. Where can i start at here?? I kno not all these sensors could be bad....could they?

Welll..... oil is either clearish bbrown or black depending on the length of time its been in the engine..... and antifreeze is usually green lol, so i think you'd be able to tell by the color.... also antifreeze has a weird smell to it........ you may have a bad gasket, or possibly a loose hose... if thats not it there might be something definetly wrong.....

Can't help you with the sensors or codes i know nothing on that matter......Sorry

That is definantly true but..

the problem i have is that its so dam dirty under there, like dirt and rocks and its sludgy..hmm, i guess its oil then..lol But i have noticed that my coolant level has went from full to the min.line in less than a month of driving, (bout 2000mi.) Also, i noticed a great amoiunt of moisture/liquid coming out of the exhaust during startup...its not oil, its water based, so i was thinking leaking antifreeze somwher like you said. I really got to get under there and check it out, how ever, i would like to have a starting point to look at..

Thanks Again.

Welll....... i'm not positive but the antifreeze would probably show up slightly green no matter what...... check on the ground after the car has been sitting awhile, possibly over night...... if it leaks into water you'll deffenitly know because oil will show up colorful and will float........ antifreeze will def. be some sort of green to it.....

Not sure about the water comming out of the tail pipe.... a lot of cars do that just from condensation build up from sitting over night..... mine does it a little bit but its way older and a lot more miles......

Other than that i would def. get it up in the air on a lift or ramps and check everything out.... gaskets, minor dings that could possibly be a hole....?

how'd it go? I'm not familiar with the 1.8 or 1.8t so I'm not "certain" about the routing of coolant lines in the back of the motor. However from all the 2.0's and VR6's I've tinkered with there are not any that go into the "back" of the block some like the heater lines come off the top. if you suspect coolant check around the head gasket, water pump, and all hose clamps. If you suspect oil check the oil pan gasket, head gasket, turbo lines, etc. Don't quote me but, unless you have a catastropic leak in the head gasket it's probably oil. As for the codes.....you're not gonna like what I'm about to say..... your best bet is to have them checked at a dealership (cringe)....... sorry...... don't hate me.

(edit) By the way, it's a VW.... any sensor can go **** up at any time. (God, you must hate me now.( it's VW's fault honest))

P.S. please don't view any of this as sarcasm, it's an honest answer to your questions to the extent of my knowledge with a splash of gallows humor( my forte).

thanks man, but i defninatly know what your talkin about, i went to the dealer and they gave me a 2000 dollar repair bill, 800 in parts, and the rest in labor....forget that, i jus wanted to know what parts are bad, and ill fix them myse;f, i have a hobby shop on the base here in cali, so i can rent a lift and get my hainds on any tool i need, i jus needed the knowledge on what to do. Howevrer, lol, they couldnt tell me what EXACTLY was wrong, they told me it was gonna b a guess and check process, so i know they are full of it., however your tips on the leaking spots is helpful, i think its coming from around the turbo and i think its oil, but i havnt gotten it up on a lift yet to confirm. But i appreciate all the help from this site, this has been better then some help i would get from honda sites for my civic...lol
But thanx again guys and i will give an update on what it is and hopefully help out the next troubled person..

Hi Dubbin,

Can you tell me where's this hobby shop of yours that you can rent? Can you give me a phone number and an address so that I can call and make the arrangement? Does anyone know where I can rent one of these shop and how much it would cost? I'm having error code p1165 and p1152. I have the scanner and got the definition. My friend is willing to lend a hand.

Can you email me at fastnetmail2 at (@) yahoooooo do t coomm? thanks.
Thanks,
Gordon

The turbo would definetly explain the oil leak.... didn't even stop to notice it was a 1.8T thought it was a 1.8.........

and how dare you mention a honda civic on here LOL...... J/K....

Still if you find out that it is antifreeze, if its not leaking around any hoses.... you def. have some seriouse problems....

ok well im back with a minor update: it is def. oil leaking on the back of the block. and well, its actually puddled up. Im not how much its leaking or rate, im not showing unusual signs of oil burning via the dipstick, so i dunno. But, (now heres a good question), what electrical peice/harness if any is located on the back of the block?? Cause it looks like everything back there is soaked/drenched/caked w/ oil. Like is there a harness connector that controls the maf and both o2 sensors??, cause if there is, that could be the reason all my codes say "short circuit" of some sort, and another thing, i would greatly appreciate a picture of some ones MAF Sensor "Connector", the peice that plugs in2 the maf sensor. It looks like a piece of mine is f'in broke, like there is 5 holes in the sensor, but only 4 prongs on the connector with clear signs that the dam thing is broke, or alteast if someone could verify ( im wishing i never got this car) lol. Any ...and i mean any help is appreciated

BTW, my car is an 01 jetta 1.8T, dam thing. haha

I can answer that for you. It's a military perk. Most bases regardless of branch have hobby shops that service members and their dependents (I.D. card holders) can use at little to no cost. Every post I've been stationed at, the folks at the hobby shop know me by name, it's so nice man, it's stocked with every tool imagineable, from torx bits to engine pickers to car lifts to paint booths.

ok so with an update, i was under the car and saw that the whole compressor side i believe, is soaked in oil, the exhaust side was dry. But evrything underneath the compressor side was covered in oil, i mean a mess. i couldnt really see too much more then that. i could sea that there was no leak from either the turbo feed/drain hoses. So im thinking mayb a turbo oil seal?? I dont know, i was under there and didnt know too much of what i was lokking at. im going to drain my intercooler and see if there is any oil in there. If there is, what does it mean?? and if not, what could that mean??
