Hey guys hope you can help me out, I just picked up a 91 jetta with a 1.8 in it and the previous owner was screwing around with the rad or radiator......I have no idea, anyways when the ignition is off the fan runs non stop as soon as you turn the car on it stops.I also unhooked the temp sensor at the rad and it is still running
any help would be awesome!

Hmmm... Not sure what is going on there. Does it stop after a while of letting it sit? If not, some of the wiring (or a relay) to the fan may have been put together incorrectly after a repair.

I know that on my 1.8T, a fan keeps running for awhile (5-10 min or so) after the car is turned off. This happens only after I run the car to get it warm, and it's normal as far as I know.

as soon as I connect the battery the fan turns on, I pulled the wires off the sensor in the rad fan still ran, pulled the relay that is attached to the rad that looks like is connected to the fan and THE DAMN FAN STILL RAN I'm maybe thinking something is funky with the fan itself

Hi there, sorry to steal your thread, but I am having the same problem. Have a 91 Cabriolet, Fan won't stop running. Disconnect the sensor that is actually on the radiator and it still runs, was told to look for a single black wire on the valve cover and make sure it was not grounded, which I did, fan still ran, heck I even unplugged the single black wire I saw from what looked like a small sensor and the fan still ran.

Any suggestions? The fan runs constantly, will not turn off no matter how long you let it run.

My problem with me is a am not sure I'm looking at the right things, can someone in detail help me out locating some of these relays and switches? I would be most grateful!

Thank you!

unplug your after run fan switch located on the valve cover(should be on the drivers side of the valve cover) unplug it and see what happens.
hey man, do you have a pic of that? i have a feeling i know what you're talking about. i don't mean to hijack this thread, but i am having an interesting problem as well. after i switched out my valve cover gasket, i think i made the mistake of losing track of what wires were grounded where. the problem now is that it was turning on at random. it would overheat (about 3/4 on the dash thermometer) i'd pull over, jiggle some wires, the fan would go on. i'd get back in the car and drive, and the temperature would drop until it was below half on the dash thermometer at which point it would rise again and start overheating. i'd then pull over to find the fan had kicked off. what do y'all think?
