hi everyone. my name is max and i am a vw jetta lover. i have recently purchased a 1999 vw jetta and the turn signals are dead. as well as the flashers. someone told me about a flasher box that may have gone bad but i have no idea. when you use the turn signals there is no action. no lights blink on dash or car and there is no clicking sound that you would normally hear. the bulbs are fine cause they work whenever i set the car alarm and lock the vehicle.
can anyoine help me diagnose this problem. i have checked all the fuses in the fuse box and cant seem to find anything. i also was told that there is a flasher box at the steering column. is this true?
it is the later body style. i used to have an 05 that looks just like it.
do you know where the flasher is located? is it under the dash? by the hazard switch or is it in the engine compartment?
where should i spray some contact cleaner? you mean by the steering wheel on the turn signal switch contacts?
i found the flasher. your right. its the hazard switch. i pried it out and removed the relay switch or whatever. i have the part number and its22 dollars. i am stoked and cant wait t ill teh parts store opens tomorrow.
This post just saved me..
I was diagnosing a problem with turn sigs and hazard not flashing.
I checked all bulbs (not fun on a 2000 Jetta.
I not only checked the 2 fuses for turn sigs and hazard (respectivly),
I had half the under dash panals removed thinking I was gogin to have to muck with the relay panal.
The pics in the repair manual are of an older switch so I did not pry out the switch, only the face plate (thinking that is all it was.
I can in the house, logged on to this forum, searched flashesr/signals and I found this article.
I then pried the entile flasher switch out, sprayed som contact cleaner on it, wiped it off and pluged it in.
_____Yea Baby______
it works. I then put all of the panals back..
thanks all for this article.. It helped me out a bunch...
Gargamelmk2, maximilian619, I will buy you a beer if I ever see you at a rally, track or ???

We have a 1998 Jetta Old body GLX (VR6) with this very problem.
Checked the fuse its fine, looked for number 21 relay,,, but I pulled all of them and couldnt find anything that look fried. My 3rd one in top row is empty and labeled number 3.
I realize this is a 1999 thread and honestly I dont know what changes where made from 98-99.
Last week the best VW mechanic in town replaced both front turn signal "sockets". Today driving home in pouring rain, i clicked my hazards for a sec (as a thank you for a driver who let me in actually) and they didnt work. The rest of the drive neither did my turn signals. Just like described above no dash lights, no blink, no click on the arm etc.
Not doubting your mechanic but make sure you have a good connection with the new sockets..combination with rain leads me to think ground issue/short in wire connectivity....which could very well have blown the relay. Relays are not expensive, there was a DIY on here I believe on checking relays I'll see if I can locate it.
Thanks everyone for posting - the blinkers on my 99.5 jetta died today. I even heard a little sizzle sound coming from what must be the hazard switch. I am curious to try this repair myself - how do I get to the hazard switch to replace it? Is it pretty straightforward?
Can somebody please help me. I have a 1998 Volkswagen jetta gl my turn signals went out yesterday afternoon then my hazards went out this morning. The hazard button still lights red but no clicking or flashing in the dash i was told i might need to replace the flasher but this was right before the hazard stopped working. I read all the other post but im still lost i see my fuse box under the dash and i removed the cover from around my steering column but i just dont recognize what im looking for. Can anybody be a little more specific about where to look?
