Fuel Leak By Tank

I have a 2005 Jetta GLI 1.8t and I filled it up today I filled it a little more after the pump stopped itself and then fuel started leaking all over the ground.
I thought before I get under it and start checking things if there was some common problem that I should look for.
I can smell fuel all the time but I have only seen the fuel leak when I fill it. I also have that check engine light and the code has something to do with the fuel system.
Thanks for the input

is the leak coming from behind the back right fender liner? or fuel filter? fuel filter is under back right door. in front of that back tire
Its in front of the rear passenger side tire but looks like it is coming down from the filler area on top of the fuel filter. I don't have anyone to help me right now but my kid comes up soon so I may just get it on some jack stands and have him pour fuel in it until i see it leak.
I know its common on some older trucks to have the filler tube crack and break over time. Sounds like that's what could be leaking.
follow that line up behind the fender liner i believe ...remove the fender liner and hopefully you can see the source where its coming from... theres a pump behind that fender liner i forgot the name. its not the fuel pump. i think its the leak detection pump or EVAP canister. check those guys out...
I was reading today that there is a tube that prevents you from over filling . I guess if you try to top off the fuel it just leaks out that tube.
Have either one of you guys ever heard of that ? OH and now my loose fuel cap light is on.
I fix one light and another comes on....lol .....good times :)

Ok so I pulled the rear tire off and the inner fender plastic and could see no problems. I also went under the car and still nothing. The leak is coming somewhere around the fuel filter but is coming from above it.......It also seems to only leak if I over fill it.
It got me thinking if maybe someone changed the fuel pump and maybe didnt get the seal put back properly and when I fill it ....it leaks.
I think I will check that next.
I also noticed an oil leak that is coming from the top of the engine and dripping down by the turbo.......good times
I just noticed the same on mine a few days ago. I think its my Valve Cover gasket, so if yours is above the turbo, it could the valve cover gasket too.
Ya I think that is where mine is coming from but its hard to see. Its an easy cheap fix so it wont hurt me to change it out plus it will give me a chance to see a little more with some of the wiring and hoses out of the way.
Ok so I found the fuel leak.
Someone had changed the fuel pump and really messed up the rubber seal and fuel was just flowing out of the top of the gas tank.
One trip to the dealer and one 12 dollar seal....cleared the codes and im good.

awesome that you fixed it! now get that valve cover gasket replaced before you starve your turbo from oil...
Next up on my list of things to fix. I might also do the coil pack conversion.
Still no codes .....Im thrilled
Valve cover done. Now on to something else.

Thanks for sharing with us. I bought a used 2007 Jetta As is no warranty and I went to fill it up the very next day and it started pouring gas onto the ground in front of the passenger rear tire. It was definitely leaking fr above the tubes and filter located under the passenger door. I jacked my car up on on the passenger rear side and took that tire off so I could see better. Couldn’t find any leaks from the filler neck. I put gas in it while I had it up on stands and this time the gas started pouring out from the opposite side (driver side). So I knew it had to be coming from on top of the tank. I researched and researched and finally found a thread that showed how to access the top of the tank where the fuel filter is. I removed the cap that was over the filter that’s under the back seat and it looked like someone just threw stuff in there and it was just a mess. I found a video that shows how meticulous you have to be when putting that filter back together so you don’t get leaks from it. I am about to go tackle this filter and I pray that this is what it is. I hope that this helps someone else. Again, thanks for starting this post and it’s still going since 2015. Haha

Attached is a pic of the filter that’s under the back seat. This is what I saw when I first
opened it. SMH
