My first Jetta, and my first car! I'm getting it at a steal and I'm excited. I was wondering if there are any common failures / problems that I should be aware of? I'm taking it into a shop where I'm gonna rip the engine part and clean it all out. Anything I should take extra time to look at? Also, could anyone recommend a good site for parts for this car?

hell since your tearing it apart, might as well do the norm

gaskets
piston rings
seals
timing chain/belt/waterpump
throw in a crank scraper
etc
