SPARK NOTES ON MY SITUATION:
-have a 99 jetta gl 2.0L A/T
-giving me two codes: P0506 and P0341
-timing is good
-first manual I bought was for 99-06 jetta (none of the schematics matched)
-replaced with a 93-98 manual on specialist recommendation (doesn't mention VSS OR cam/crank pos. sensor

Here's the skinny. I bought a 1999 Jetta GL, 2.0L A/T. When I bought this car the check engine light was on and it wouldn't idle on start unless revved to 1.5k rpm. I took it to have the codes checked and came out with four codes. The mechanic I took it to said it had a bad o2 sensor and MAF/VAF sensor. I paid 300 to have them replace them. They released it to my wife saying she needed to drive it for a half hour to reset the computer. She took it and noticed the idle issue was still present. An hour later it died at an intersection and started smoking. She took it back and the guy said the starter was fried and the timing belt was bad. Needless to say I was less than trusting and took it home to fix myself. I bought a 99-05 haynes repair manual. Managed to fix the starter and timing belt and corrected the timing (it was off by a bit), despite the fact that the manual didn't match up to my car at all. The idle issue went away, starts and idles perfectly. Still getting two codes. P0501 and P0341. Went on to attempt to check Vehicle speed sensor but was unable to because the book didn't match. Moved on to crankshaft position sensor, but again, the explanation in the book did not match at all. I called O2Motorsports and they informed me that there are in fact two 99 jettas. I have an early 99 and so I should reference to 98. I exchanged my manuals and now this book makes no mention of any sensors, or throttle body...Haynes manuals by the way. QUESTION!!!: What is wrong and what can I do to fix it?? If you need more info or want to email me please do, I feel like I'm bashing my head against a wall right now...
