Hello!
Having problems setting up my timing on my car after my timing belt broke and bent a valve. I've searched on the forums for a good answer, but haven't been able to find it, so im gonna post my problem, maybe get some help.

like i said, timing belt broke on my 2005 2.0, bbw engine. After doing a valve job on the head, put it back together and started doing the timing. Put the locking plate in the camshaft to line it up for tdc, and then went looking for the mark on my flywheel...which i cannot see. Its just too rusty and its not there anymore.
I can place the piston 1 at TDC by way of putting something in it to find its highest point.

My question is, should it be at its absolute highest point, or should it be barely starting on its downstroke to set the timing?
Without that mark on my flywheel, its more of a guessing game to get this timing right, plus the added nuisance of having to take the valve cover off just to set the camshaft
on this bbw engine :(

I'm just trying to cover my bases on this before it turns into a bigger problem

Thanks for any and all help!

No but thanks for the reply...I have a bbw engine...Its horrible in that it has no camshaft sprocket markings to line cam up tdc. You have to take valve cover off, align cam to tdc with a locking plate that locks the cam horizontally across the cylinder head, and then set the crank to tdc.

My only problem is getting crank to TDC without an identifiable mark on flywheel. I had to remove and then reinstall the harmonic balancer to get the new timing belt on, and there is play back and forth when you reinstall it, so i cant (i dont believe) rely on that mark to be true until i get the flywheel set.

I really want to say that the #1 cylinder needs to be at it upper most point, but ive heard some cars have it just barely on the downstroke side to set it. Im just trying to confirm it...

Again, thanks for the reply and the help!
