Hi everyone

I just recently purchased a 94 GLS with 104,000 odo, and I don't know anything about the car. I was wondering just how reliable this model is going to be and what are some common problems they have. I bought the car for a daily but I have a hard time not moddifying everything I get my hands on so, I was also wondering how much (if its even a good idea) will it cost to convert this to a GLX VR6 with a manual tranny from an auto? Consider the fact that I do all my own work and have done automatic to manual tranny swaps before.

Well since you say you've done it before, I won't insult you intelligence. But (and this is a big but) I've only done that particular type of swap on an old Ford Falcon, and the problem we ran into was no where to mount the clutch pedal and run the cable. Though I despise automatic transmissions, unless you have a clear picture of where everything goes beforehand I'd hold off on attempting such a swap.

(edit) to answer the first part of your question, I have a '97, I love it, I've driven american, japanese, and others, aside from an Audi (same company) and a BMW, VW's are the best performers I've driven. Sure they have their problems same as any other car, consider this, look at your '94 now look at japanese and american cars from 1994 you'll find VW's more than hold their own.

swaping in a vr is actually pretty easy. The engine and trans bolt right in. You will need the engine harness and ecu from the vr. I dont remember all the parts from the top of my head you will need for the auto to man swap so i wont spread any missinfo

Man, everysingle person I know is swapping in a VR6....... why not try something original, or a little more not so easy.

Im not saying anything bad about the VR6 but everyone does it... Soon everything is going to be a VR..... Try an r32, or put a damn audi engine in there....

But most VW engine and tranny swaps match right up... Most of the parts fit, except what power hour was telling about......
