So i have a 1997, Jetta GLS 4 speed automatic 2.0 engine with 125,000 miles on it. While driving it the other day the Speedometer, Temp, gas, and RPM gauges stopped working, all pegging at 0 and staying. Since we have bought this Jetta the cruise control has never worked, as well as the red airbag light has flickered off and on and random times. Now we have to fix this problem with the meters. The lights still work, and if you turn off the car, and turn it back on, the meters start working for a short random period of time before quiting again. Does anyone know what this might be? After reading around the only thing i have noticed is people with the same general type of problem were told it might be a failing cluster? Any other ideas on what might be wrong with this? How much do clusters cost to replace? Would it be something we would be able to do ourselves? Any answers to this question would help as money is tight so we would rather fix it ourselves. If anyone has any idea whats wrong with my wonderful Jetta, please tell me.

Another side problem if anyone knows, the cars rear windows have also never worked, the front work just fine, and the fuse isnt bad. Any suggestions?

My dad had this same problem with his GMC Envoy. The gauges went haywire then would quit working, then eventually quit all together. I checked the ignition switch, good. Checked the netural reset swich then unhooked the battery turned the ingnition on and they reset themself's. Not sure if that would help, but its a quick easy check list to mark off. Someone here will know how to test the pods if this doesnt help im sure and the window problem is cronic motor failure from what ive read, or bad swiches maybe? Good luck!!

My guages did th same thing, but my cluster lights were dimming out too. Alternator tested good on the car, but i took it off and it tested bad at three places. I would take it off and have it tested before takin the dash apart lol. As for windows idk, i've hard the microswithes or motors can go bad. Get a multimeter and take the panels off. Hope tht helps some

check your fuses and battery connection I had problems too. Some of the fuses are actually in different spots. Just check all your fuses if not then either it could be wiring or your motors died but take your odometer out and check the plugs the buy here pay here dealer i bought mine from had taken out my odometer and taken out the check engine light and some others so who ever you got yours from may have cheated you out and just did not tell you what was wrong.
