there is a kind of loud ticking coming from a black rectangle shaped box next to the engine and the coolant globe... I was thinking it might be some type of valve or thermostat... I dont know anything about these cars... THis is my first... Anyone have any ideas... I know its not the enigne though...

I have herd when that sound makes that its rather your low on oil or you have to tighten your belt. Check your oil first though.

Looks like a power steering fluid reserve, or a brake fluid tank...........

no brake fluid would above the master cylinder next to the brake booster above the brake pedal... this is right beside the engine and coolant reserviour on the passenger side of the vehicle... anyone else got any ideas... what the box is... the ticking is loud and obnoxious...

I suggest check oil level or trans. mission oil level !!!! Sounds like something needs Oil ....Good Luck let us know if this helps.

no its coming from the box thats in the picture thats beside the coolant res... Its not oil or nething like that... the sound is coming from that box...

the ticking sound comes the black box... it is the box with the green cap looking thing on top of it... that is the coolant reservoir above it.. this is a mk 4 2.0 setup... it doesnt do it on start up... starts doing it later... any clue...

i think it is... there is a hose that comes from it and turns to steel tubing and goes towards the suspension... any idea of y it is ticking so loud...

well i can't actually look at it but is there a pump encased in that box?

it would go to the power steering pump then to the rack and pinion, is it ticking while driving or just idling, or the whole time.

it does it after start up... if i drive for a little bit then come to a slow speed i can hear it... it goes up and down in speed with rpms...

the ps pump might be low on fluid, check its up or inbetween the max and min fill lines. maybe the ps pump is worn, not likely the case but it could be a possibillity

i really wanna say its the pump. i would check the fluid level first though.

checked the ps fluid it was low put it up to the good mark and it still does it... is that just the normal sound of the pump...?
