MKIII Gauge Cluster only Half Working?

4345 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  bboggess91
Ok guys, got a 96 Jetta GL.
And on my gauge cluster, the Tach and Speedo aren't working, but my fuel and oil temp gauges are (as is the odo and clock)
Loose wire?
Fried Fuse/Relay?

At idle, the needles on the Tach and Speedo just vibrate.

Finally. I'm having the same issue in my vr. Sometimes it wont do it and some times it will. Ill sit there and play with it cause I know it wont do it all the time. There are tines where I can't wait and ill drive.around guessing how fast.in going. Lol. I also would like to know what this maybe.
I had that happen to me on a few hondas for me it was a bad cable and a bad/dying relay. Hope it helps
Thanks, I'll check that stuff!

On the back of the cluster where the harness connectors meet the cluster are very weak solder joints. It sounds like the solder joints on your tach and speedo are going bad. If your good with a very small soldering iron you can repair this for free. just take the harness apart and see what wiggles. Or there are shops online that repair our clusters when they go bad.
I'm good with a solder iron but i don't have one. Would it be something I'd have to buy a new cluster? I kind of want to get a MKIV Gauge cluster and tint the leds red.

Would those people be able to sell low mile clusters, or reset them to 0?
Just noticed another issue with the cluster, the odometer has stopped about 3k short of what the car is actually at. any way when i have the cluster out that I can change what the odometer reads to make it read accurately or am I fubar'd?
