I'm still pretty new to the VW scene, but I got a good deal on a 1990 GLI with a 9A and a 5 speed. It's served me well for a few months but left me on the side of the road. I think it's either an ignition problem or something's wrong with the fuel injection. I haven't taken anything apart yet, but it started hesatating on the highway when I tried to accelerate, then it stalled, not pretty. I got it started again after checking all the electrical connections (one was loose) but it didn't last long. There's a lot of black smoke if it does start. I need a little help with where to start. Please, I miss my noisy commuter.

Checked the battery, gonna check the plugs and distributor next, just gotta get some time. Hoping that's all it is, I've never had to work on the CIS-E before.:-\

IT HAS MAGICAL HEALING POWERS!!!![woo] Not sure what was exactly wrong with it. Got it started and it's been running fine ever since. It's a little worrying because I don't know what caused the initial problem. Going to test the igniton coil, see if it's getting weak. I don't know, I'm just glad it's back!!

It dosen't have magical healing powers after all :'(. It is most likely the coil getting weak. Any suggestions for an upgraded one? have to do some research, find something better than OEM replacements. If it needs to be replaced anyway, might as well upgrade (that's what I tell my wife anyway)

I would check out the MSD Blaster 2 or 3 ignition coil. they are higher voltage than OEM and runs for about $35.
