new to jettas

I've decided to trade my truck for a jetta. I'm new to diesels and new to jettas. Would like to stay around the $10,000 range but have to find that at a dealership because of trading my truck. Any suggestions or help.
What years should I be looking at?
What years did vw make major changes?
Which ones get the best fuel economy?

thanks for any help

If it was me I would stay away from any diesel with a dpf. So anything pre 2008 is ok.

Damn son. These damn treehugging hippies ruin everything. Days of blowin smoke are over. Drove the price of non dpf trucks up 7grand. Just got a memo through work that dpf deletes are going to be treated like cat deletes, with a big fine.

Well yeah. Its unlawful. Dpf is pretty much a cat converter on steroids. My pops 6.0 powers stroke still has Egr on it for safety reason with the law.

The urea yeah lol. I mean I'm clean when it comes to that. Gloves on and all. Fill the system from a distance. And man do they go thru this ****. The system is a pain to learn. I'm still on process of learning it with the Egr cooler on top. Not easy.
Egr cooler by itself. Cake.
Egr cooler and urea. Uhhhhh......what's the code say. Regeneration Malfunction. OK got it. Uhhhhhhhhh.

No more code this go check this. Its 1 code and go fk urself ordeal lol.

Anyway, back to the OP... diesels are great and will run forever with proper care. Buttt with these new dpfs (diesel particulate filter) its rough. The fluid cost around $10 per 2.5 gallons and if the system fails...its expensive. The ford power stroke mentioned above...if the dpf system needs replacement you can look at a 9g bill for system replacement. It sucks. Damn treehuggers. But watch I think us gassers will see something like this down the road...

Also I don't think the Jetta TDI has any big parts we mentioned above. I do know sooner or later the government will prolly make all diesels put on a retrofit dpf system. Just to meet emissions. Yet gas engines are worse than diesels.
