I have a 2001 Jetta, 96k. I bought this used around 9 months ago. It is a 4 cyclinder, manual transmission. Someone put aftermarket wheels and rims, 17 inch on it. I recently discovered the speedometer is off by 8mph. On the interstate, I think I'm running 80 but actually around 72-73mph. The motor is up to about 4000 RPM at 72-73mph. Is this normal. It really feels like the motor is having a hard time, I would hate to run it up to 80-85mph. Any suggestions, or is this normal.

I have a beetle, but I am wanting a Jetta someday. Anyway, I"ll be going about 65 down the highway and my car is going 3500 rpm. I don't think it is normal. My car was not bought new. It is a 2000 GLS Beetle. It was a rental too (my mistake) before I had it. My bf drives it alot and he says that's way to high to be going 55-60 with 3500 rpm. He told me my car needs another gear but lots of money to do that. So I live with it for now. Can't afford another car right now. Just thought I'd put my .02cents in.

Thanks for the info. My bf keeps saying it needs another gear. I am not about to dish out the money for it. Soon my beetle will be up for sale and I might be getting a used Jetta. I dont know yet, depends on what I find in my area.[woo]
