So how much can you get on a tank?

I've been toying with hypermiling since a lot of my driving is city or rural, not highway. Best I've stretched a tankful so far in my '04 Jetta, 2.0 is 376.5. How about you?

Well I have 85K miles on my car never used full synthic but I'm sure I have a lot of sludge built up in there so I was gonna run 1/2 synthic aka 1/2 blend to clean out some sludge b4 I go to full blend.

I just filled up my tank and got 103.5 miles on 4.831 gallons that comes out to 21.424 MPG no high way millage at all. But i do beat up on the gas when I have to respond to a fire or ems call. So this time I'm gonna drive normal for 103.5 miles then fill up again and see what I get.
I fill up every half a tank, or about 200miles. It's best to fill every half way instead of going below, since you never know whats going to happen and also you get less miles out of the final half anyway.
I typically get slightly over 400 combined city/highway driving (summer). Its not uncommon for me to see 34 combined city/highway when winter fuel isn't in play. In the winter I'm lucky to get 30mpg. Usually its 27-28.
sorry- forgive me- I have to be honest- I have no idea why you would get dramatically better gas mileage in the summer vs. winter.

thats some pretty good mpg lol send me some of that magic fuel..im lucky to get 300

Just filled up today and I got 303.4 mi on 11.516gals. That gave me a little better than 26 mpg which is up from just under 24 the last tank full. I eased up on the throttle a little this time too and had more highway this time. This with a bad cat waiting for the dealer to replace.
o man ..your gonna leave there poor..next time go to happy car place on boston ave

Oh GAWD no! Limited Auto @ Pixli & Grand(?) or is it Barnum Ave. They are "The Dealer" and paying for the cat job so Lil Red will pass emissions. I used my Russian connections to catch a break.

You caught a glimpse of me yet? Won't be long and I'll have a JJ sticker to help with the ID.

Extra warm up (IDLING) time in the Winter? Just a WAG. [teacher]

noo..boston ave..down the hill from bpt hospital..next to bishop corner(bar/strippers)..nay havent seen you around..few other jettas flying up and down the street though...(is limited auto near hess and that new gas station?or is that a different place im thinking of..overpriced cars)
I get 30-33 mpg religiously with my 99 2.0. I drive 80% highway everyday and about 160 miles per day. 83000 miles on her and all stock. A LOT better than my 07 RAM!

Limited is near Frankie's (?) Diner and the BankNorth branch, where Grant and Pixli Pl meet at the light on Barnum. They carry mostly Euro brands. The Hess station is down where Barnum and Boston fork, right? Wish I went that way more often, the Irving is always cheap there.

As soon as Ken gets the orders sent out you'll have a little more help with the ID.

Winter fuel contains additives to increase the volitility of the fuel (it's ability to vaporize). They do this in northern states so that your car actually starts in the morning... If you use summer blend during the winter, your car will not start, guaranteed.

Anyway, these additives are a higher octane, however they contain much less BTU's (in other words, heat energy). This means that although you could theoretically increase boost and/or advance spark timing to make up for this loss in power, nobody does... Which is why you get, on average, 4% worse fuel economy using winter blend fuel... Due to having far less heat energy.

...Which is also why fuel with ethanol gives you less MPG's. Ethanol (the same kind of alcohol you consume) contains high octane, but less BTU's, like the additives in winter blend fuel (also alcohols, with some other ''good stuff''). Ethanol is a lot more corrosive too, which is why people try and seek out ethanol-free fuel.... But thats for another thread.

And I know someone is going to say ''What about E85 and methanol injection'', so I'll answer that too. When you use alcohol injection, it bypasses the MAF, and isn't calculated in with fuel delivery though the injectors... You're ''sneaking it in'', so to speak, because its un-accounted for. So although it has less BTU's than gasoline, it has a higher octane. You get the benefit of using gas, with the addition of a higher octane... Meaning you can advance spark timing and/or boost more so than if you had a lesser octane mixture. And pure E85 (85% ethanol) again, has less BTU's, but can achieve a ton of power because its octane is well over 100. But fuel economy is garbage...

Ok. Done now lol.

The best mileage i recorded was this weekend actually. 386.9 miles on 1 tank. All driving was done on the highway at cruise control between 65-70. not the greatest, but it proved to me how much different driving styles will change your mpgs. What can be expected if i was to chip my jetta? Its stock right now, minus the SCM.
i fill her up with 37 dlls, like for a weeks worth of school work and crusing

Without a change of driving habbits you can expect a slight increase in fuel mileage. Could be anywhere from 1mpg-3mpg
@Boost Addicted- preesh the thorough explanation. Lived in NC all my life, so I had no idea! :)

Also, you very carefully stated that without a change in driving habits, chipping will increase gas mileage... so the question is: is it challenging to not change driving habits when you chip??

Sorry for the most basic of questions- this is my first Jetta, my first non-American car for that matter, and my first car all on my own without any man's assistance. I'm trying to put on my big girl panties and handle the situation.

Haha no problem.

It is a bit difficult to keep the same driving habits, because once you get tuned, your car has so much more power... Its addicting to use it lol. But as long as you get good quality fuel at the right octane and keep your speed consistant (at cruising, rate of acceleration matters much much less), you'll still see an increase in MPG's.

I tend to accelerate from stop lights and such pretty quickly... I like 2nd gear pulls lol, so even though I get up to my speed quickly, I still get really good mileage cause my cruising speed is static.
well been doing alot of traveling for work and last week i got 700k to a tank which was 40 bucks i was happy :)
:)
My tank's about 40bux too, its painful... 93 octane is around 3.10 here, and a good bunch of it is probably ethanol. Theres been a big problem around me too where places are using up to 30%! A ton of no-start complaints have come into the shop and its turning out to be the gas..
dependin on gas price fluctuations, i usually can 100 miles per 11 dollars
