Does anyone know if I can install a 12" sub with my stock stereo? I have a 06' Jetta. Any help? I just dont really have the money to buy a new head unit and plus I like the smooth look of the stock stereo. Thanks!

no. subs generally can not be added to a stock unit because a sub must be ran by an amplifier and most stock head-units do not have RCA-Outs for the amp.

I have a Sony CDX-GT300 Head-unit for sale.
2 sets of RCA outputs
removable faceplate
wireless remote
52wx4
etc. More info available if u are interested

Yeah tell me about it. I wanted a sub for my 07 jetta but i have to replace the head unit. to me it doesn't look right. I wonder if the new 08 jetta have the output on the radios they come with.

if so, i'd fancy buying one.

also i can't even get satellite radio. but i think theres other ways around that as well.

Yea but the stock radio has the sweet red lights and i think it looks better! And I already have an amp for my sub I just need to hook it up with a remote to control the bass level from the sub. there has to be a way to do it!!

line convertor

I am still in the process of trying to pull the 2008 radio so I can take a look at the back of it. It doesn't appear to have the tabs or slots that older jettas that have documented removal processes.
Regardless, based on what I find, I might be considering something called a line convertor to bump the speaker level powers to preamp level.
It seems sorta a hack, but I think the entire box install might be hackish:
  • anybody ever used the remote turn on from the sat receiver power feed?
  • anybody know the power feed from the 12V outlet in the trunk? I need to look that one up, but I think it isn't going to come close to requirements of any mid-sized amp.
  • anybody ever used one of these line converters - specifically: http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?search=line+converter&i=142SLC4 . My hope is this doesn't mean I just halved the power to the stock speakers.
Thoughts?

The high level inputs on an amp are for funning high level speakers. You want to run subs (low level) Get a line out converter and hook it up. that one you linked to on crutchfeild is a good one cause it has adjustments. You need your input to you amp to be routed via the RCA connections or 99% of amps will not produce anything in the low range.

The converters are easy to hook up, just get to your speaker wires and tap into them. You do lose some power on the stock speakers so make sure you use the rears, with subs on your won't really need the rear except for "fill" sound anyways.

If you got more questions on how to do it right, PM me.

Yes you can I did I had 2 Alpine r12'sbut I also have a car audio back ground it very simple really if you try to install it your self to really have to get a really good high level to rca converter and use only one ground from one side or the other and both positive when you wire in the rca converter make sure you wire left to left and right to right remember only one ground for the both tho
