So I have come across a 2001 Jetta 1.8T with 82k miles on it and went and checked it out today, and was really impressed with it. So I been searching around and found a few forums and wow, I am really scared to buy the car. Everyone is having crazy problems with their cars and the damages done is massive. Peoples windows are falling through the doors, peoples throttle bodies are shorting out, are these cars really that crappy? Here is a link to the car, I test drove it today, the check engine light was on and told them they need to run the codes and fix the problem. I couldn't get them to go any lower on the price, even offered cash, $6700 is as low as they will go. But after reading a bunch of forums, this car sounds like a pile of junk, heres a link:

So, what would you all, people who have owned and experienced this car, suggest to do? I really liked the car, but being in college, I can't afford a huge money pit right now.

Well, advice in this realm is touchy. If we tell you to get the car and it's a lemon you'll blame us. Obviously we love our cars (we're members of this and like forums). My best "advice" is to read the forums pertaining to the model in question. Check out all the info you can. Personally, I love the cars, they're fun to drive, they have more low end punch and are quicker than their Japanese counterparts. The downside of which is since they are so much fun I drive mine hard and it requires maintainance.

Well, I wouldn't blame you all, the forum, as I know how cars can be, but I have owned cars where I would warn people not to get and give reasons. I don't plan to mod the car much, maybe exhaust, but I plan to keep her stock and just drive her normally and not dog the hell out of her. Just looking for guidance is all ^_^.

I meant that metaphorically, but you understand. Yes they are great cars. But from what I'm hearing, you should probably pass on it if it needs work. There's a million fish in the sea, another car will come up without problems. I looked at 5 Jettas before I bought the one I have now, a '97 GLX with a VR6 and 36,000 miles, I bought it from a little old lady in Arizona. If you have doubts ask to take the car to a mechanic, or if you are knowledgable, dig into it yourself. Either way it's a buyer beware market out there. Good hunting. ;)

if your driving the car regularly instead of driving it hard this car will be great for you and would last you a very long time. the only thing i use to have problems with when i bought the car which might be why the person sold it is it had the check engine like going on like every 2-3 months. they weren't that expensive but were a pain cause it happened so often. once it was all cleared up tho my car has been running great now that all the electrical problems are over with.

dont be afraid to buy one, they are pretty reliable. When you look at forums, of course you will see a lot of cars with problems, because part of the forum is to help people when they do have problems that they themselves cannot figure out. Hell go check the honda forums and you will see the same thing, and everyone knows hondas reliability
