Hello!
Found this site by accident, but glad I did. i just bought the new 2011, 2.5L Jetta. Toffee brown metallic, if you were wondering. 170hp. Now, I did see the HUGE article on warranties, but I am not into reading it all at the moment.

My question is this... if I go out and buy a simple ass KNN air filter is this gonna void the warranty? also, is it really gonna make much of a difference, not so much horsepower wise, but fuel wise? Also, spark plugs. If I get the 2 headed ones, what is that gonna do?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Not much of a car guy.
Thanks in advance.

Don't change your spark plugs, but you can use a K&N filter no problem. :)

Welcome to the forum!

The phrase 'void warranty' gets thrown around a lot - the truth of the matter is that your warranty cannot be voided. However, if you modify a part and it breaks (or is the direct cause of another part failure,) those repairs would fall 'outside of warranty'. In other words, the warranty covers premature failure of parts due to manufacturing or worksmanship defect, but not due to installing the wrong spark plugs of your own free will and accord. ;)

The basics behind warranties are pretty simple.

You can do your own maint. just document everything and bring it with you to the dealer if you go in for some type of service so they can record it all.

Aftermarket parts are not covered by the warranty and will probably "void" you out of certain services due to the aftermarket part.

Aftermarket parts may include:

Intake Manifolds
Headers
Cam Shafts
Upgraded turbos (if applicable)
Upgraded Brakes
Flashed ECU
Chipped ECU
And other areas that can be "modified" to perform outside of the vehicles original specs.

Thanks peoples! I was into the vw dealership today and asked them about this stuff and found out that the only way it's going to affect the warranty is if it is THE cause of the problem. So that's not a big deal. That being said, what performance mods would you guys recommend that, more than likely, will not be cause a problem. I do understand that it is a risk and you can't guarantee me anything.
