Hi. I’m new to the forum as well as new to VWs. I recently bought a 2003 Jetta GLS 1.8T.
The other day I had a strange whine from the belt side of the motor but was in a hurry so I thought I’d check it later. After driving about 20 minutes the car dies and I pop the hood to see the timing belt has shredded. What could cause this? I bought a kit from O’REILLY that will be in today that includes the belt, water pump, tensioner, and idler pulley. How difficult is this job to do and how long should it take? I know one motor Mount has to come out and I have plenty of jacks to support the engine and car as needed.

I did my 03 jetta with the 2.0 engine. One motor mount bolt is very difficult as I recall. The 10mm bolts on the timing cover were tricky. Rattle.gun for the crankshaft bolt, 19mm I think. Mark TDC clearly as a backup to what is there. Take pictures. Good luck its doable.

Well ended up having to do a full head swap. Bent all te exhaust valves and one intake valve in every cylinder
