Just got a 1996 Jetta. 4-dr, 5-speed, Trek edition.

I was told that the linkage was bad, and that 1st and reverse are rubbing together. I live in WNC, and pushing this car uphill is no easy task. Its heavier than it looks!

I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I might get a linkage, exactly what it is, how much it might be, etc...

Any help--much appreciated! ;D

I have the same car. The linkage is pritty easy to change. Most of the time it is just a little ball joint that falls off from wear and tear. You may as simple as changing that part. It should not cost to much. Also be vary carefull with reverse. The gear can be chipped vary easy and if it chipps you will have to get a new tranny.
