So I have an MkIII. its got 14 inch rims. If I upgrade to a larger size, do i need to also change the suspension? also can i fix the speedo calibration by just reducing sidewall size?

you dont need suspension, but wheels look like trash with a stock suspension. I wouldnt go larger than 17's on a mkIII because they look like trash. Dont worry about the speedo, it wont be thrown off enough to make a difference. You also have to worry about offsets with new wheels. Too low of an offset might rub on the springs, so you will have to get spacers.

yeah cuz i was only thinking of going up to 15's. the 14s i have are absurdly small. i dont wanna do bigger than that though cuz it'll be a rough ride here in nyc, where the building are big, and the potholes are bigger.

i was thinking of going with 15x7 rims with 195/50 tires.

a 50 series is huge, id go with a 45. They arent as big, but there is still enough tire for all those pot holes. IMO 16's look best on mkIII's and fill the wheel wells nicely. Also, why stop at a 7" wide wheel

thats why i'm limiting to 15 or 16x7. i dont wanna screw anything up. plus for my needs 7 wide is really all i want. main reason for gettin new wheels is that right now im running on 14s. i mean my nephew has hot wheels cars with bigger wheels. also, how do i know the offset size?

im in nyc 3-4mph is the difference between riding clean and gettin caught with a ticket. nyc cops are very overzealous with tickets if you arent like a supermodel. and im a guy so it really doesnt work that whole flirting thing...

offsets are usually listed on the back of the wheel. If you want your wheels to sit somewhat flush with the well you want somewhere around et 20 front and 15 rear. If you want to tuck a little go a little higher

I have 17" with 205/40/17 Nankangs Ultra Sport NS2 all round, I'm thinking of getting the FK Sport Edition Plus Mk3 Golf / Jetta Coilover Suspension Kit-Adjustable Shocks from ECS website or the EIBACH PRO SYSTEM KIT 8552.780 from www.dotcomparts.com... anyways with that said, how low can I go without rubbing? The eibach system gives me a 1.4" drop and is cheaper, the FK coilovers give me a 2.1" to a 3.1" drop. There is only a 150$ price difference between the two, are the coilovers better? Will it rub with the coilovers with a 2.1"drop??
