I have an 02 approaching 100k, I know most domestic cars start to have significant problems past the century mark. What about Jettas? Particularly the 2.0L engine, manual, GLS I have. I bought certified pre-owned, so all the defects, and recalls have been done, including moon-roof drains.

The car is in great shape for its age, I see its only worth about $4300 kelly blue book. When do these cars start having significant issues?

you have the 2.0 manual. if routine mainenance has been kept up with and continues to be in the future, then i would say that not even half of the life of your car is gone. i've read about many many people with 200,000++ on them. Old saying still holds true, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

your car doesn't sound broke to me. I would keep a truckin!!

Agreed. Your water pump, timing belt will be due soon, and I think there is one more thing that usually gets done with those 2 things... They usually come due every 60-80k. If you take care of any car it will take car of you.

Timing belt is past due along with the water pump. They also usually replace the thermostat when that gets done along with replacing the timing belt tensioner.

Hopefully they already did that maintenance. :-\
i think that other thing that gets replaced may be spark plugs and wires cuz i believe its recommended every 20k....i do em when its needed hehe....but yeah timing belt kit brings thermostat, water pump, timing belt , serpentine belt , tensioner for t-belt, cam and crankshaft seals.

Honestly, I think its stupid to ditch a car simply because it gets to 100k miles...

If you like it, keep it. 100k miles doesnt mean diddly s**t on a VW. I bought my car with a 100k miles and I've never had a single issue.

If you're looking to upgrade, I would sell it before the odometer creeps past a 100k miles. As soon as people see the 6 digits they shy away. If it were me I'd just keep it, unless you are strapped for money and thats your reason for selling it.

joeblack214,

What you read is true. The VW officially recommends timing belt at 105k... and most of us probably still cannot understand why...

However, don't change your timing belt past 70k and you're playing with fire. Remember, if you timing belt snaps while the engine is on you risk bent valves (1-$2k fix). If you're screaming down the highway when it snaps... say good bye to your engine (or hell to $4k+ of rebuilding repairs--or basically new engine block). Most (if not all?) of the MK4 Jettas are interference engines which means that a mistimed cam will bend your valves. Unlike some other types of engines, you won't be able to simply tow the car, replace the belt and live to drive another day.

Here's a very cool video of what happens when your timing belt snaps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYPT5HKmocU&feature=related

Btw, am I crazy or is that Sarah Palin behind the Camera?

Yeah, I'm crazy...

water pump should be done with timing belt. you are already up in there, won't cost that much moer to get it done too. I have a 1.8t and the dealership quoted me like 1000-1100 dollars for the whole job, parts, labor, etc. With parts, labor and everything, i had my mechanic do it for a pinch under $600. If you got a family/local mechanic have them do it. I can't remember exactly, but the parts were not expensive at all

Well, 600 to 800 bucks is the normal price, but the dealership always try to get some extra cash from us my friend.
And like others already told you, Change your timing belt kit with water pump ect... And that car will be like a rock!!
BWT...You need to use the G20 coolant, No the green one from autozone.
