I just bought a Black SE with 17" charcoal rims with ground effects kit.
Everyone on here keeps saying the Wolfsburg is better - i compared the two at the dealership and the SE was so much more appealing - the rims, the packages, everything.

What is better about a Wolfsburg? Just curious.

Made in Germany -vs- made in Mexico is the main thing in my opinion. There are a few differences in the trim but that's all a matter of taste. I have an SE too and I love the car. Viva la Mexico!

i was all set up with buying an 08 silver wolfsburg until the guy told me i had to dump premium in it. that was a definite deal breaker for me. the wolfsburg had 30 more horses and the turbo but they also wanted $2,000 more for it.
177hp is basically double than what i had before so i'm finnnnneeee with the SE 2.5.
and there's the microscopic Wolfsburg badge on the side, but... $2,000 for an 1" long badge doesn't do it for me.

That what the deal breaker for me too on the Wolfsburg, having to get the premium. I feel as if I made an excellent choice in getting my SE!

I own a 08 Wolfsburg and had several people tell me i didnt need to run premium and i dont. Mine is also 6speed manual and as far as comparison the wolf runs much much better than the SE.

If someone would kindly help me with posting pics here at the forum ill post some.

thanks

If you have a 2.0T you should be running premium, you may not get anything now but if you drive hard for enough miles, your engine will start knocking and pinging and of course the risk for detonation is much higher w/ regular. an extra $0.20/ gallon is not as much as it sounds; for me its an extra 6 bucks a month.

people tell me that you can get away with alternating premium and regular but it just doesn't seem like a good idea to avoid premium altogether if that's what it needs. i mean that's just me, but it's definetley your call.

yeahhh it probably wouldn't have been too bad in gas, at least until it skyrockets again next summer. the only color they had was gray and i wanted black, so that was the sub-deal breaker for me.

Wolfsburg

I have a wolfsburg, but I am half a modder [at least I try to be]. The wolfsburg has some exotic appeal to it and that was the deal maker for me. All the cars I owe are sorta rare variants of cars [My old commuter was a Sentra SE-R Spec V] so this was a logical choice.

The DSG transmission is just neat. I am educated as a mechanical engineer [never worked as one tho] and this just had some interest factor.
If you haven't seen anything about it, this is a good link:
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/dual-clutch-transmission.htm

I agree that premium is the way to go with this engine. It's a pretty high compression engine [10.3:1 from below] and the turbo just adds to that argument: http://autos.yahoo.com/2008_volkswagen_jetta_sedan_wolfsburg_edition-specs/?p=eng

That being said if the computer is anything like that of a Ford, then it has 'microphones' of sorts listening for pings. As soon as it hears one, it pulls timing like it's going out of style. Pulling timing hurts your gas milage, reduced horsepower, and all sorts of poor things so why do it?

I read something about premium versus regular awhile ago. 15 years ago gas was prolly around a buck 50 and premium was about 20 cents more. Today gas is around 4 and premium is still 20 cents more, so the rate of change wasn't consistant and premium actually is more well priced.

I agree with something I read while hunting for the compression ratio. It's like driving some type of excitable dog :) I didn't mind the SE at all, but the wolfsburg is a little more fun.

OK so I have a 2.0T and when I bought it, the dealer told me I could use regular gas!!!! It really bugged me bc i saw on the gas door premium, and I did ask, and still the same response. When I first got the car 2 years ago, I used premium until the gas was really starting to hike up. I AM SO GLAD I READ THIS POST!!!!!!!!!!! So wtf kind of damage have I been doing to my car with the regular gas (87)... and can I fix that by using premium all the time now? HELP PLEASE!!!

The car has sensors that pull the timing back if you use 87, it just kills your fuel economy and power. So you probably didn't do any damage. I have heard people that drove super hard all the time that messed up their turbo and had to have it rebuilt after 30-50K miles. It wasn't on a 2.0T though; it was on a nissan 300zx; and they only lost one of their turbos. Haven't heard anything go wrong with the 2.0T. You definitely will prevent any further damage by using premium from now on.

Premium vs regular

I used to own an 05 G35 that required premium so I never used anything less. Who at the dealer knows more about the car than the people who built it?

Now that I own an 08 Wolfsburg, my first two tanks were with regular gas. I think that VW recommends Premium and not requires it but after switching to premium, there was not only a difference in how it accelerates, but my fuel economy also increased by about 2 mpg (at least for me). Since it ran better and the difference in price at each fillup was only a couple of dollars, I will stick with premium. I knew that the 2.0T took premium before I bought it but since all my vehicles require premium anyway, I was used to paying it anyway. It is really not that big of a difference in total price per fill up especially when you factor in the difference in mpg when making the switch.

IF YOU HAVE A TURBO CAR YOU HAVE TO USE PREMIUM (93) GAS!!!! that is the rule. if you want to be ignorant ad break your **** thats your problem. everyone that knows anything about cars will tell you that. so is it worth paying 1.50$ more at the pump or paying hundreds to even thousands of dollars in engine damage? your call.

I believe the Wolfsburg is simply the S model with a few added features like leather (heated) seats, powered driver seat, power sliding moonroof, and monster mats. Its similar to "Limited Edition" packages that other manufacturers offer for their cars.

The SE model is more appealing because there are more standard options. I think most people on this site (correct me if I'm wrong) prefer the Wolfs because it is still very nice, but costs a bit less than the SE. Plus the name sounds cool.

As far as the premium gas vs. regular gas debate, I read in my owners manual that regular gas is just fine. I have the 2.5, I didn't know the Wolfs came with the turbo option at all...
